Caracol City, Belize

Archeological research and excavation on the site over the past thirty years have revealed the importance of this Maya city. In its' hey day 150,000 - 300,000 people would've lived there which is quite something as the population of the whole of Belize is only 300,000 today and Belize city's population is around 60,000.

The site contains ruins where Maya ritualistic buildings still stand, an astronomical building (used to track shadows to inform the Mayan calendar), a Mayan ball game court - where battles were re-enacted and the most impressive and largest structure, a sky temple used to honour the gods who were believed to guard the thirteen layers of heaven.

There is still many areas and buildings which have yet to be discovered on the site and excavation work is continued by university students and archeologists, also on site is the beginnings of a museum to house the monuments and artifacts related to Mayan life.
