Lake Atitlán (San Pedro, San Tiago Aitilan & San Marcos)

Another ‘chicken bus’ adventure from Huehue to Lake Atilan changing three buses and arriving in the lakeside town of San Pedro. The views of Lake Atilan are stunning and you can see why it has attracted so many vistitors over the years. The vast lake is surrounded bu mountains and volcanoes with lush trails to walk and beach areas to swim in. We visited three of the thirteen lakeside villages over six days. San Pedro has a reputation for a party town but we found it very relaxed and chilled, with some excellent European inspired restaurants and bars. Other than renting a Kayak to paddle across the lake to a beach we also visited the nearby town of Santigao its’ church and bustling Friday market.

After a Sunday BBQ at Smoking Joe’s we took the lancha crossing to San Marco on the other side of the Lake an even smaller community of alternative expats and locals. A very relaxed spiritual vibe with many places for mediation, massage, yoga forest retreats and health food shops. Our place was up on the hillside and the view of the lake spectacular, the volcano in the distance was impressive too, we could see plumes of smoke rising from it early in the morning. We practised yoga on the terrace as the humming birds pollinated the trailing flowers above us, it was very peaceful.
