After leaving Omaru we drove north west to the valley that houses Mount Sunday the setting for the town of Rohan in the Lord of the Rings movies. Unfortunately, none of the set remains however the setting is stunning, a large glacial valley with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains all around home to a signal outcrop of rock and a meandering river. It was completely worth the bumpy drive along a gravel track road, to witness for me one of the most iconic landscapes of the movie series. We spent the night at a free DOC campsite south of Christchurch called Chamberlains ford.
