Hihi and Bay of Islands

Another stunning drive down from our campsite at Hihi beach to Waitangi Treaty grounds where a declaration between Great Britain and the Maori tribes was signed. Still controversial to this day the guide, tour, museum and tribal show where all excellent. One of the main reasons that the British were invited to the area was to bring some order to “The Hell Hole of the Pacific” Russell a township that sprung up off the back of the huge seafaring industries that inhabited the South Pacific, Whaling being the most profitable. Today this peaceful town at the mouth of the Bay of Islands is idyllic and you can’t really imagine the brothels and bars full of sailors who had been at sea for months. The Bay is stunning and even in winter was relatively mild.
