La Paz

Is a vibrant city situated in a valley with many its inhabitants living on the slopes, in some ways similar to Medellín however rather than a tropical green backdrop it has a landscape of snow-capped mountains. The main form of public transport is a series of contemporary cable cars that connect the city in a loop, navigating the steep inclines and congested traffic. We stayed in the area of Sopocachi a middle-class neighbourhood not too far from the historic centre and walking distance to the yellow Gondola line.

From the city we took the bike ride tour of Yungas “Death” Road which was stunning a cycle ride like no other along a road that has claimed so many lives in construction and after. We also saw the wrestling women of La Paz the “cholitas” which was amusing enough before catching an overnight bus to Potosi. We left at 9pm, due to arrive at 6am but due to a landslide the driver had to turn around. After giving him an extra pound each for petrol and a 5 hour detour we arrived around midday. Luckily enough the bus was one of the most comfortable we have been on with leather seats and bags of room (we also had Sherlock Holmes on Netflix downloaded for entertainment).
