Tutapere, Curio Bay and Slope Point

We spent the night in the town of Tutapere after our drive back from Milford Sound, in the morning we set off southward to the coast where the southern alps meet the ocean. Driving along the southern coast we stopped at Curio bay which is home to both yellow and blue penguins, unfortunately we saw neither at this time of day and year. However, it is also home to an impressive petrified Jurassic forest that has been fossilised and is visible at low tide. After walking around the bay we headed back towards the most southernly part of New Zealand, Slope Point where we spent the night at a free DOC campsite where the river estuary meets an costal spit, a beautiful location to spend the night and morning and I’m sure very busy in the summer.
